Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well
https://nextbigideaclub.com/magazine/right-kind-wrong-science-failing-well-bookbite/45323/
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is the ability to fail well. Without failing well, there can be NO growth. My wife and I recently moved to Mexico (full time for three years now), we both have studied Duolingo fastidiously, it is a fantastic program for conversational Spanish. However, recently we both (along with a neighbor) just started teaching English to local residents who speak almost none of that language. I must say that in the last couple of weeks, I’ve made more advances in my speaking than in months of online study. Neither of us are advanced Spanish speakers, all of us (students and teachers) are failing (hopefully failing well). We cannot grow if we are too afraid to look a little silly. Where can you go to fail well this week? How can you model that behavior to the children in your care?

The Dawn of a Mindful Universe: A Manifesto for Humanity's Future
This book presents a manifesto for our need to rethink how we treat the earth and each other. What the author refers to as a revolution towards biocentrism and the recognition that there is only one tribe on earth; and it’s not just a Sapien tribe. Marcelo Gleiser’s insights are both challenging and uplifting. If you’ve been wondering about a path forward for or global community, this is a sanguine blueprint.

Trailblazing Women: The 15 Beloved Female Icons of American Culture
https://wealthofgeeks.com/beloved-female-icons-in-american-culture/
Many of the choices in this article surprised me, in particular, their choice of No. 1. What becomes clearer to me, a healthy future will not be found by continuing the misogynistic patterns of leadership we have exhibited in most cultures throughout the history of humanity.

The Dysfunctional Superpower
https://reader.foreignaffairs.com/2023/09/29/the-dysfunctional-superpower/content.html
Warning: this is an in-depth article that took me a while to both read and digest, it was worth every minute, especially as I watched the circus in the Republican “Led” House and the trial of an unhinged fraud unfolding in New York. If any of that concerns you, take time for this article. I’ve never been a big fan of Robert Gates, but I went in open-minded and gained from his insights on how the US currently looks to the rest of the world.

US jail practices are racist and an 'affront to human dignity,' UN experts say
Thank you to the UN for finally publishing what many of us who have worked in the corrections system for decades have known and experienced. In a recent conversation with an inmate, we both agreed that the only good thing about more politicians being locked up is that it will hasten prison reforms. Sadly, similar to the Viet Nam war, policies don’t change until it affects those who make them. When children of the middle class started being sent to the Asian country, people began demanding change from their politicians. I don’t think change in corrections will begin because leaders are shamed by the UN, but I do think it will change, as these same leaders find themselves behind bars.

In U.S. first, California governor signs law taxing guns, ammunition to fund safety programs
https://apple.news/Aede1vynSShmjweDbYtLLXQ
I’m very inspired by the controversial changes that Governor Gavin Newsom is bringing to his State. Finally, someone is addressing poverty, homelessness, and gun issues in a manner beyond “thoughts and prayers.” I think it is a hilarious juxtaposition to use gun and ammunition revenues to support school safety. Goes to the heart of the matter.

'Fossil fuel age' has failed says UN Secretary-General, and other nature and climate stories you need to read this week
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/09/fossil-fuel-climate-and-nature-read-this-week/
Who has the most to lose by continuing the insane use of fossil fuels? Who is fighting the hardest to prevent change? The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, was bold in his statements at the Opening Ceremony of the World Leaders Summit at COP27. “Ben Fieto,” Señor (Portuguese for “well done”).
