The American Evangelical Church Is in Crisis. There’s Only One Way Out.
https://apple.news/AT12NgRW2SgWnBb-zCXaXvg
This article has too many insights to go unread. Whether you are religious or non-religious, there are insights here that apply to conservatism as well as evangelism; Protestant or Catholic. The primary key is the unholy (and impossible) struggle to return to a past that really didn’t exist. “Happy Days” wasn’t a reality show and it never really addressed racism in America at that time. Archaic and wishful thinking that we can return to a past, that really is a fairy tale, is at the heart of many neo-conservative movements; religious and otherwise. This clinging to false beliefs has relevant impact on ideologies old and new. As the author, Russell Moore states, “Denominations that are glacially slow to recognize documented sexual-abuse cover-ups are lightning quick to expel congregations they find to be too affirming of women’s leadership.”
I side with the author in that while abandoning church, did we also abandon an important source of community? Sadly, many churches played a major part in this exit, striving to be centers of theology and dogma rather than developers of relationship and community.

Affirmative Action for rich kids: It's more than just legacy admissions
The Ultra-Conservative majority of the Supreme Court would like us to believe we live in a “Post-Racist” society (as would some Conservative Governors), but their retelling of history is woefully inaccurate while causing substantial damage to the fabric of the US. Even, at times, against the wishes of the majority of the people it purports to represent.

The Best Leaders Use These 4 Phrases When Others Try to Manipulate Them, According to a Clinical Psychologist
I found the four phrases in this article not only useful for business leadership, but also for anyone who has been “gaslighted” by another. If you are working with young people, these phrases can be helpful for them in two ways: When others attempt to manipulate them and when manipulating language or behaviors sneak into their everyday lives.

A mom was billed $102,000 for her son’s hospital stay. It shows everything that can go wrong in American health care
https://fortune.com/well/2023/07/21/hospital-bill-102000-mental-health-care-debt/
This is a real indictment of a health care system that doesn’t support its population. This story of a mother whose son needed mental therapy is all too common, not only in the US, but in other countries where parents of mentally struggling youth live too.

Florida Has Lost It: Mandates Teaching Kids “Blacks Benefitted From Slavery”
https://allhiphop.com/opinion/florida-sucks/
What Florida is insisting on teaching young people is akin to child abuse. These young people will be ill-prepared for the future in a diverse world. Creating curricula to make yourself feel more comfortable with an abhorrent past is criminal. History—in fact, all education—is not supposed to make us more cozy. It is supposed to engage a generation to build a better future. Young people will not be able to create that better future if we lie to them about the past.

Meganets: How Digital Forces Beyond Our Control Commandeer Our Daily Lives and Inner Realities
I included this article because I liked the term, “Meganets.” Technology experts and others are concerned the major abuse of Information Technology will be in unchecked “mega truths” ensnaring people with their conspiracy theories. Purveyors of this abuse include not only Donald Trump in his election lies, but also the Conservative GOP’s favorite candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr..

Read Obama’s Powerful Open Letter to Librarians Amid Book Bans
Sometimes the voices of past Presidents become more insightful once they leave office. That was certainly the case with Past President and World Statesman, Jimmy Carter. Freed from the weights of political application, many past presidents are able to use their power rather than their authority to support causes that truly mattered to them. To Jimmy Carter, it has been homelessness, to George Bush, Jr. it is his version of “Compassionate Conservatism,” to Barack Obama, it is the strengthening of Democracy and to Donald Trump, it continues to be himself.
