Discovering the Depths: Top 10 Dostoevsky Quotes to Inspire and Challenge Your Thinking
https://www.blinkist.com/magazine/posts/discovering-depths-dostoevsky-quotes-inspire-thinking
If you’re like me, you have enjoyed Dostoevsky without actually being an expert. Hemingway, Freud, and Einstein counted Dostoevsky as one of the world’s greatest minds. The author/philosopher had a lot of applicable insights into living under a Russian Oligarchy. He was an expert in authoritarianism and thriving under repressive regimes, even sentenced to prison by Count Orlov and Tsar Nicolas I. No doubt Dostoevsky would be a target of modern-day Putin. Given the deadly, clandestine, influence the dictator has over global politics. This malevolent puppet master revitalizes the relevance of Dostoevsky’s literary works.

Pete Buttigieg Had A Moving Response To House Speaker Mike Johnson’s LGBTQIA+ Views: ‘Maybe We’ll Just Have Him Over’
https://uproxx.com/viral/pete-buttigieg-responds-mike-johnson-lgbtqia-views/
While Christian imposters like current House Speaker Mike Johnson, purport to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, it takes a true leader like Pete Buttigieg to show actual compassion in the face of spiteful prejudgment. Read the Transportation Secretary’s response to the pendantries of Speaker of The House (for the moment).

Twitter thread details how the world might be if everyone had universal basic income
UBI (Universal Basic Income) isn’t something that will probably happen soon (though initial experiments with the concept have proven very efficacious). This article explains the concept in some depth and why it may prove to be the healthiest alternative to a world where the vast majority of people labor and pay taxes to support the grossly wealthy, tax-avoiding, minority.

They Tried to Expose Louisiana Judges Who Had Systematically Ignored Prisoners' Petitions. No One Listened.
Human Rights abuses abound in US prisons, especially in States like Louisiana. This deep-dive into racist practices that abound in the Louisiana system is a cry for awareness and call for action. Almost every inmate will one day be back in our community and the way we treat people in our prisons will dictate the qualities they will bring back to our neighborhoods.

Economics in America: An Immigrant Economist Explores the Land of Inequality
I found this to be an interesting dive into the pedagogical history of economics; especially from the outsider viewpoint of an immigrant to the United States University system. He discusses the biases he discovered, the hurdles he had to overcome, even though he was male, anglo, and from a European nation. One can hardly imagine the impediments for a non-anglo or female scholar.

The death rate for babies in America rose for the first time in 20 years

The US, which loves to pride itself on many things, ranks 54th out of 195 nations in Infant Mortality. Worse still, that mortality rate is now rising—for the first time in 20 years! No single cause can be identified, but no doubt policies designed to diminish the care of women and infants, such as cutting WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant, Children) exacerbate this issue. So too, the backward leaps in women rights under the conservative, GOP-appointed, Supreme Court. How much more damage will women and infant health suffer under the conservative tutelage of the likes of Mike Johnson who has stated, “Every American woman has a duty to birth at least one able-bodied worker." Welcome, America, to the GOP’s version of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Future-proofing Education: The Imperative to Prepare Students for an AI-Driven Job Market
A group of articles piqued my interest this week. My experience in education leads me to believe that the last application of technology in that profession is actually focused on childhood development—and only if it doesn’t cause a lot of changes to the profession. Admittedly, that is a cynical view, backed by years of personal observation and experience. Another article in this week’s links talked about the tyranny of incrementalism and how it can actually deceive us into believing that we’re making progress when actually—over the long term—we are falling behind. This article, “On The Brink of Utopia,” discusses how we need leaps in technology, not baby-steps if we’re going to survive the cataclysmic issues our world faces today.
